The Lagos State chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has issued a dire warning to poultry farmers, predicting a staggering 50% bird mortality rate if the current heatwave persists. Chairman Mojeed Iyiola emphasized that farmers are already experiencing significant losses due to the rising temperature, and urgent action is necessary to mitigate the crisis.
"If all precautions are not taken, farmers risk losing half of their flock," Iyiola stressed. He advised farmers to adapt their feeding schedules and ensure access to cool water to help their birds cope with the heat. "Heat always causes mortality among birds. They stop feeding by 11:00 a.m. and refuse to eat due to the heat, leading to dehydration and panting," he explained.
