A social media post that insulted Islam has triggered a wave of anger and violence in Katsina State’s capital.

The post, which was written in Hausa by a Christian native of the state named Mani Abubakar, has since been removed from Facebook. It claimed that Islam was baseless and doubted the origin of the Quran.

The provocative post caused a backlash and a group of people tried to find and attack Abubakar. However, he managed to flee on Tuesday night, Jan. 30, before they set his house and car on fire at Babaruga.

Abubakar’s location is still unknown.

The Christian Association of Nigeria is collaborating with the authorities and intends to meet with the Emir of Katsina to secure his protection when he comes back.

Christian leaders in the state have appealed for peace and tolerance.

The Vice Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Katsina, Venerable Muyiwa Segun, denounced any form of violence or disrespect against other religions.

“Everyone should respect the other’s religion,” Segun said, adding, “Christians have no right to insult other people’s religion. That is not the way to do evangelism.”

Segun also verified that CAN is working with security officials and religious leaders to maintain peace and safety in the community.
