Sule Lamido University appoints His Royal Highness, Alhaji Baba Umar Faruk II, OON, as its new Chancellor for the 2025/2026 academic session.


Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State, has officially announced the appointment of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Baba Umar Faruk II, OON, as its new Chancellor. The approval was given by the Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar A. Namadi, FCA, who serves as the Visitor to the institution.

This appointment, made in line with the provisions of the University Law 2013 (as amended), marks a significant milestone in the leadership structure of the university. According to Malam Bala Ibrahim, Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State, the decision followed extensive consultations, and the Emir has already pledged his full commitment to serve the institution and the people of Jigawa.

Meet the New Chancellor

Early Life and Education

Alhaji Baba Umar Faruk II was born on March 25, 1957, in Katagum Emirate. His academic journey began at the Kano State College of Arts and Sciences (1974–1976) before he proceeded to Bayero University Kano, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.

His pursuit of excellence extended internationally as he attended the French National War College in Paris, participated in a Ports Security and Safety Course organized by the International Maritime Organization, and undertook a Public Policy Course at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

Distinguished Career in Public Service

Before ascending the throne of his late father, the Emir built an illustrious career in public service, holding strategic roles across federal ministries and agencies. Some of his notable positions include:

  • Director of Budget, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation
  • Director, Navy, Federal Ministry of Defence
  • Director, Investment and Economic Development, Ministry of the FCT
  • Director of Maritime Services
  • Director of Administration, Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation
  • Director of Human Resources, Federal Ministry of Interior

In 2010, he rose to the rank of Permanent Secretary, serving in ministries such as Special Duties, Water Resources, Solid Minerals, and Youth Development.

Ascension to the Throne and National Honours

On December 15, 2017, he was turbaned as the 12th Emir of Katagum, a highly respected traditional leadership role in Bauchi State. His dedication and service earned him the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

In July 2021, he was also appointed as the Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), further cementing his influence in Nigeria’s educational and leadership landscape.
