Tinubu to Visit Japan and Brazil for Diplomatic and Economic Engagements

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a two-nation working visit to Japan and Brazil, departing Abuja on Thursday, August 14, 2025. The trip underscores Nigeria’s continued drive for stronger bilateral ties and expanded economic opportunities with strategic global partners.

According to a statement released by the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President will make a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Yokohama, Japan.

While in Japan, President Tinubu will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), scheduled for August 20–22, 2025. Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, the high-profile summit will focus on driving Africa’s economic transformation, fostering private investment, enhancing institutional capacity, and promoting sustainable development.

The TICAD platform, initiated in 1993 by the Government of Japan in collaboration with the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, serves as a critical forum for high-level dialogue between African leaders and development partners. The last edition, TICAD8, was hosted in Tunisia in 2022.

In addition to plenary sessions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks with top Japanese government officials and engage chief executives of Japanese corporations already investing in Nigeria. These discussions aim to attract more Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) into sectors such as manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, and digital technology.

Following the conclusion of TICAD9, the President will travel to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24–25, 2025 at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In Brazil, Tinubu will hold bilateral discussions with his host, participate in a Nigeria–Brazil business forum, and explore new trade, investment, and cultural cooperation opportunities. His delegation—comprising key ministers and senior government officials—will work towards signing agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in sectors such as agriculture, energy, transport, and defence.

This diplomatic tour is seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader foreign policy agenda to reposition Nigeria as a strong player in global economic partnerships and multilateral cooperation.
