NEDC Distributes Relief Support to Vulnerable Groups in Borno

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) distributes food and relief items to vulnerable groups and persons with disabilities in Borno State.

NEDC’s Humanitarian Relief Efforts in Borno

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has extended vital relief support to vulnerable communities in Maiduguri, Borno State, with a special focus on persons living with disabilities. The intervention highlights the commission’s ongoing role in improving the welfare of citizens affected by floods, insecurity, and displacement in Nigeria’s North-East region.

The distribution exercise was supervised by the NEDC Borno State Coordinator, Engr. Mohammed Umar, on behalf of the Commission’s Managing Director/CEO, Mohammed Goni Alkali.

Floods and the Impact on Persons with Disabilities

Engr. Umar explained that flood disasters in Borno State had disproportionately affected persons with disabilities. According to him, nearly 50% of their members were impacted by the recent floods, making emergency relief a critical intervention.

“We felt it was important to reach out to them because they are among the most vulnerable. We conducted an inventory and identified 706 members, all of whom are persons living with disabilities,” he stated.

This focus on inclusivity underscores NEDC’s recognition of the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups in the region.

Items Distributed to Beneficiaries

As part of the relief effort, each identified beneficiary received both food and non-food items to ease their living conditions. The distributed support packages included:

  • A 25kg bag of rice
  • A 10kg bag of sugar
  • A gallon of vegetable oil
  • A carton of pasta and noodles
  • A rubber mat
  • A blanket

These provisions are designed to meet both immediate food needs and basic household requirements, helping affected families regain stability.

NEDC’s Commitment to Vulnerable Groups

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to improving livelihoods in the North-East, with a strong emphasis on vulnerable populations such as:

  • Persons with disabilities
  • Flood and disaster victims
  • Internally displaced persons (IDPs)
  • Communities affected by insurgency

The NEDC continues to implement relief distribution programs, skill acquisition initiatives, and infrastructure rehabilitation across the North-East, aiming to rebuild lives and restore hope.

Humanitarian Relief and Development in Nigeria

Nigeria’s North-East region remains one of the most fragile humanitarian contexts due to years of insurgency, displacement, and natural disasters. Relief efforts by agencies like NEDC are crucial to supporting sustainable recovery and community resilience.

NEDC’s Lifeline for Borno Communities

The NEDC’s relief distribution in Borno State is more than a short-term intervention—it is a statement of solidarity with vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities who often bear the heaviest burden during crises. By combining immediate food aid with non-food support, the commission is helping affected families navigate hardship and restore dignity.

As challenges like flooding and displacement persist, continued support from the NEDC and collaboration with humanitarian stakeholders remain vital for sustainable recovery in Nigeria’s North-East.
