The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians ahead of the forthcoming Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise, cautioning that multiple voter registration will attract severe penalties, including the complete removal of offenders’ names from the national voter register.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting on the resumption of the CVR across the country, Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Mohammed Sadiq, stressed that voter registration is both a fundamental right and a civic duty for every eligible Nigerian citizen.
“No individual can participate in any election without being duly registered. We are urging all Nigerians who are 18 years and above and have not yet registered to seize this opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs),” Sadiq stated. He further warned that anyone engaging in multiple registrations risks being permanently delisted from the voter register.
According to Sadiq, the new CVR process will officially commence on August 18 with online voter registration, allowing eligible citizens to register from anywhere in the country. The REC urged residents of Plateau who have already registered to take advantage of the period to collect their PVCs.
For online registration, Nigerians are required to visit the official INEC CVR portal to begin the process. The platform caters to:
- New voters aged 18 years and above
- PVC collection or transfer requests
- Replacement of lost or damaged PVCs
Sadiq explained that the commission has introduced strict measures to ensure that non-Nigerians are not allowed to participate in the registration process.
He also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, political parties, and other stakeholders to mobilise and sensitise eligible residents to fully participate in the exercise, stressing that increased voter registration is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
This latest warning from INEC underscores the commission’s determination to maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral register, ensuring that every vote in the 2027 general elections comes from a legitimately registered voter.
