FG Upgrades NIN Enrolment Platform to Capture More Nigerians in Diaspora

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major upgrade to its National Identification Number (NIN) diaspora enrolment platform, aimed at increasing the number of Nigerians abroad registered in the national identity database.

According to Daily Trust, the improved platform will offer a more seamless, secure, and efficient registration process for Nigerians living outside the country.

Current NIN Enrolment Statistics

As of August 2025, a total of 122 million Nigerians have been successfully enrolled in the NIN database.

- Lagos – 12.7 million
- Kano – 10.4 million
- Kaduna – 6.9 million
- Ogun – 4.9 million
- Oyo – 4.5 million
- Katsina – 4 million

- FCT – 3.8 million

- Delta – 3.2 million
- Jigawa – 3.1 million
Lowest Enrolment Figures:
- Bayelsa – 767,620
- Ebonyi – 999,991
- Ekiti – 1.1 million
- Cross River – 1.4 million
- Taraba – 1.7 million
- Yobe – 1.8 million

Gender distribution shows 66.9 million males (56.5%) and 51.5 million females (43.5%) registered.

Missed World Bank Target

Despite the progress, Nigeria is yet to meet its target under the World Bank Digital Identity for National Development (ID4D) project.

The country missed the initial June 30, 2024 deadline to register at least 148 million citizens, prompting a two-year extension. The new closing date for the project is June 30, 2026.

Benefits of the NIN Upgrade for Nigerians Abroad

In a statement released on Monday, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) confirmed that the system upgrade would:

Ensure faster, more secure enrolment for Nigerians in the diaspora
Provide robust service delivery with reduced technical downtimes
Equip Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) with advanced training for efficient enrolment management

All diaspora FEPs are required to activate their licences on the upgraded system within 48 hours. Nigerians abroad can then access services from any compliant partner.

NIMC’s spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, apologised for any inconvenience caused during the upgrade and confirmed that a dedicated service team has been set up to resolve issues promptly.
