The management of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, has confirmed the death of one of its lecturers, Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, under tragic and controversial circumstances involving a student of the same department.
According to initial reports, Mr. Ibikunle had checked into a hotel in Anyigba with a female student, Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel (Matric No: 24GE1034), from the Department of Social Science Education. During their time together, he reportedly became unresponsive while allegedly engaged in sexual activity.
Upon noticing the development, Miss Samuel alerted the hotel’s receptionist. Both she and the receptionist reportedly rushed the lecturer to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
The Kogi State Police Command has since taken over the investigation. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Aya, stated that Miss Samuel has been detained to aid investigations and help establish the exact cause of death. She was initially held at Anyigba Police Station before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Lokoja.
“The case involving Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel has been transferred to the CID in Lokoja. She remains in custody as investigations continue to determine the facts behind the incident,” Aya noted.
Meanwhile, the university management expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Mr. Ibikunle and acknowledged the public concern the case has generated.
In an official statement issued by the Registrar, Barrister Yahaya Segun Alilu, the institution described the lecturer’s death as “tragic and disturbing,” adding that the circumstances are being thoroughly investigated by the appropriate authorities.
“The University is deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, a dedicated lecturer in the Department of Social Science Education. The incident involving Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel is being handled with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement read.
The university further assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that it will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies throughout the investigation.
