Suspected Vandal Caught Stealing ₦2m Generator Cable at FUT Minna

A 24-year-old man, Ibrahim Aliyu of Angwan-Kanawa, has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing property at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State.

Aliyu was said to have illegally gained entry into the university premises on June 12 by scaling the perimeter fence. Once inside, he reportedly broke into the university’s generator house, forcibly damaged the iron door, and cut off approximately 16 meters of armoured cable connected to the institution’s generator system. The stolen cable is estimated to be worth about ₦2 million.

According to the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspect was nabbed by university security personnel working in collaboration with local vigilantes while attempting to sell the stolen material.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to acting alone. He stripped the rubber insulation off the armoured cable, packed the copper wiring in a sack, and took it to his residence,” SP Abiodun disclosed.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation and is expected to be charged in court once inquiries are concluded.

Two Others Nabbed for Vandalizing 100m of Electric Cable in Munya

In a separate incident, the police also arrested two additional suspects — Mohammed Isah, 25, and Ishiaku Ali, 30 — both residents of Kwagana village near Beni, for allegedly vandalizing over 100 meters of electric cables in Sarkin Pawa, Munya Local Government Area.

The duo was intercepted by a joint police and vigilante patrol team along the Beni–Sarkin Pawa road while transporting the stolen cables in a white Lexus vehicle with registration number RKD 84 AU. A cable cutter was also recovered from the vehicle.

SP Abiodun confirmed that the suspects confessed to the crime and revealed they were en route to Abuja to sell the stolen materials.

They have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and will face prosecution.
