The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected armed robber following a gun battle with security forces along the Abuja-Kaduna Road on Monday morning.
According to a statement by police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, the operation was carried out by police operatives from the Gawu-Babangida Division, in collaboration with military personnel on routine patrol.
“The suspects were intercepted around 5:30 a.m. on June 16, 2025. One was neutralised during the exchange of gunfire, while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds,” Abiodun said.
The body of the slain suspect was deposited at the Sabon-Wuse General Hospital morgue.
Recovered from the scene was a wooden, carved gun made to resemble an AK-47 rifle, along with a mobile phone containing a SIM card and charms tied around the deceased’s waist. The mobile phone is being examined to help identify and track other members of the gang.
Police Foil Mob Lynching, Rescue Motorcycle Theft Suspect in Minna
In a separate incident later the same day, police officers from the ‘A’ Division in Minna rescued a 25-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Abubakar of Barkin-Sale, who was nearly lynched by an angry mob after being caught attempting to steal a Bajaj motorcycle near the General Hospital, Minna.
“The police received a distress call around 4:00 p.m. and responded promptly. The suspect and the motorcycle were secured, and he is currently in custody,” Abiodun confirmed.
He added that investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the inquiry.
