Former Senate President David Mark has raised serious concerns over the ongoing wave of deadly attacks in Benue State, warning that the government's failure to protect citizens could push people to defend themselves.
In a statement issued through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the persistent bloodshed across Benue communities as tragic, senseless, and beyond tolerance.
“The situation has reached a dangerous point. If the killings continue unchecked, people may be left with no option but to take their safety into their own hands,” he said.
Government Has Betrayed Public Trust
Mark emphasized that protecting lives and property is the fundamental duty of any government, adding that failure to fulfill this obligation erodes public trust.
“When government cannot defend its citizens, it fails in its most basic responsibility,” he stated.
He called on the federal government to act swiftly and decisively to stop the violence and restore peace, while also urging the Benue State government to intensify security efforts at the local level.
Call for Community Cooperation
Mark also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to collaborate with security agencies and remain alert.
“This is no time for silence. Communities must remain strong and support every legitimate effort to end the crisis,” he urged.
Appeal for Calm and Unity
While expressing deep sympathy to the victims and their families, Mark encouraged citizens to stay law-abiding, calm, and united in the face of adversity.
> “Our people have endured so much. Even in grief, we must not lose our sense of order. Let us remain resilient and stand together against fear,” he said.
