Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has vowed that those responsible for the brutal mob attack on wedding-bound travelers in the state will face justice.
Daily Trust earlier reported that 31 individuals traveling in an 18-seater bus owned by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, were attacked by a mob in Plateau State. In a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the tragic incident, adding that the state government will not tolerate any form of criminality.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the victims, en route from Zaria in Kaduna State to Quan’pan Local Government Area of Plateau for a wedding ceremony, lost their way and unknowingly entered a tense, volatile area in Mangun—a community already under strain from ongoing terrorist attacks,” the statement read.
“Sadly, eight innocent lives were lost, while several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care at the General Hospital in Mangu,” it added.
Governor Mutfwang, who visited both the survivors at the hospital and the scene of the attack, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the mob action as tragic, condemnable, and entirely avoidable.
He lamented that Mangun District and surrounding areas—such as Chakfem in Mangu LGA and Mushere in Bokkos LGA—have suffered over a month of coordinated terrorist assaults, resulting in daily casualties and displacements, leaving communities in a state of fear and mourning.
However, the governor emphasized that ongoing security challenges do not justify such a senseless act of violence against innocent travelers.
Quoting the governor at the scene, Bere stated:
“Today is a dark day for Plateau State. I never imagined that such a senseless and brutal act could occur here—especially considering the commendable role our youths have played in supporting security agencies to repel criminal attacks.”
“It is heartbreaking that the same youths known for their courage and patriotism could take the law into their own hands. This is completely unacceptable, and it will not be ignored. Our vision is to build a Plateau that is safe, welcoming, and hospitable to all. We have been sensitizing young people on the importance of ensuring safe and unrestricted passage across all routes in the state. This incident is a painful setback.”
Governor Mutfwang also reassured the public that Plateau remains safe for travelers. He disclosed that he has spoken with his counterpart, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, to brief him on the tragic events. He also reached out to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, to express his condolences.
“In a gesture of solidarity, we will be sending a high-level delegation to condole with the Government and people of Kaduna State, as well as the Zazzau Emirate,” he said.
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated that acts of violence and jungle justice have no place in a civilized society. He warned against taking the law into one’s hands, regardless of the circumstances.
Bere further stated that the governor has directed the General Hospital in Mangu and all medical facilities treating the injured to provide the highest standard of care, with the Plateau State Government covering all treatment expenses.
Governor Mutfwang also instructed security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident, bring those responsible to justice, and implement proactive measures to prevent a recurrence.
