A new global report by Pew Research Center shows that Islam is currently the fastest-growing religion in the world. The study attributes this rise mainly to natural population growth, rather than religious conversions.

According to Pew’s Global Religious Landscape report, released Monday, Muslims generally have more children and are younger than people of other faiths. Between 2015 and 2020, the average Muslim woman was estimated to have 2.9 children, compared to 2.2 for non-Muslim women.

The report, which looked at changes in religious affiliation from 2010 to 2020, found that while Christianity remains the world’s largest religion with around 2.3 billion followers, the number of Muslims is increasing quickly, narrowing the gap between the two religions.

Notably, the global Christian population dropped by 1.8% over the past decade. In contrast, most of the Muslim population growth occurred in Muslim-majority countries.

The study also noted a sharp rise in people with no religious affiliation, especially in the United States, where their numbers nearly doubled (97% increase) since 2010. Globally, China has the highest number of religiously unaffiliated people—about 1.3 billion.

While Christians still make up the majority in 60% of countries, their numbers fell by 5% or more in 40 countries and grew significantly in only one.

The decline in Christianity and other religions like Buddhism and Hinduism was linked to adults leaving the faiths they were raised in. Islam, on the other hand, was the only religion that gained more converts than it lost.
