 Legend Bernard Lacombe

Bernard Lacombe, former France international striker and Euro 1984 champion, has died at the age of 72 following a prolonged illness.

Lacombe, who began his professional football career with Lyon, went on to play for Saint-Etienne and later Bordeaux, where he built a reputation as one of the most prolific scorers in Ligue 1 history.

Over the course of 497 top-flight appearances, he netted 255 goals, a tally second only to Delio Onnis (299) in the French league’s all-time scoring chart.

A Career Spanning Clubs and Country

After retiring from playing, Lacombe returned to Lyon in a leadership capacity, serving as the club’s manager from 1996 to 2000.

In a tribute, the club expressed deep sorrow:

“It’s with immense sadness that we learned of the death of Bernard Lacombe.

Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all.”

Lacombe represented France 38 times, scoring 12 goals, and played a key role in Les Bleus’ victory over Spain in the 1984 European Championship final in Paris.
