FG, World Bank Partner with Ondo to Train 34,000 Livestock Farmers

The Ondo State Government, in partnership with the Federal Government and the World Bank, has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at training over 34,000 individuals involved in the livestock industry to enhance productivity across the sector.

The programme targets poultry, pig, sheep, and goat farmers, along with processors and marketers of livestock products within the state. Upon completion of the training, beneficiaries will receive equipment to support their operations.

Mr. Olufemi Adeogun, the State Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), revealed this during a media briefing held in Akure on Tuesday.

He explained that the training falls under the Project Development Objective of the L-PRES initiative—a six-year World Bank-supported programme implemented through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. The project aims to improve the productivity, commercialization, and resilience of livestock production systems while enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to respond to crises or emergencies.

“Ondo State’s L-PRES Coordination Office is one of 20 states implementing this vital initiative across the country,” Adeogun said.

“The project focuses on three value chains: poultry, pig, sheep and goat. Its overall aim is to ensure smooth implementation in line with the Project Development Objectives and the operational guidelines outlined in the Project Appraisal Document and Implementation Manual. It is domiciled in the State Ministry of Agriculture.”

According to Adeogun, the 34,000 targeted beneficiaries have been organized into clusters and sub-clusters to facilitate structured access to training and resources.

He called on all stakeholders to support the programme, expressing confidence in its potential to revolutionize livestock farming in the state by 2028.

“The implementation of L-PRES is ongoing. By the end of the project in 2028, we expect a transformed livestock sector where farmers are well-rewarded for their efforts. We urge all stakeholders to collaborate with us to make this vision a reality,” he added.
