Armed Herdsmen Attack Benue Community Just 48 Hours After Tinubu’s Visit

Armed herdsmen have struck again—this time targeting the Wannune community in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State—barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu visited the state to address its escalating insecurity crisis.

Residents who spoke with SaharaReporters on Friday evening described the attack as devastating, stating that the assailants set homes and properties ablaze, forcing many to flee for their lives.

One resident, a youth corps member serving in the area, recounted the scene in a panic-filled message.

“Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please, let Nigerians pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging the entire area,” the corps member said, calling on security agencies to respond urgently.

This fresh attack has further deepened doubts about the impact of President Tinubu’s recent visit and the effectiveness of any security strategies put in place.

During his visit, the President met with community stakeholders and directed the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to apprehend those behind the killings.

Tinubu’s trip came in the wake of a massacre in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, where nearly 200 people were reportedly killed—a tragedy that sparked nationwide outrage and condemnation.

Many citizens have since questioned the federal government’s capacity to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in, criticizing the visit as more symbolic than substantive. He described it as a "political spectacle" lacking genuine commitment to resolving Benue’s security crisis.

“It’s admirable when a leader shows empathy and stands with the people in times of sorrow. That’s true leadership,” said Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe. “However, the visit was overshadowed by political theatrics.”

The renewed violence in Wannune underscores the persistent security challenges in Benue State and highlights the urgent need for decisive and practical solutions to protect vulnerable communities.

Stakeholders are now urging the government to address the root causes of the conflict and implement sustainable measures to safeguard lives and property.
