Tragedy in Makkah: 75-Year-Old Nigerian Pilgrim Passes Away During 2025 Hajj

A Nigerian pilgrim, 75-year-old Adizatu Dazumi from Edo State, has sadly passed away during the ongoing 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Dazumi, a native of Jattu Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area, reportedly completed the Tawaaf ritual—the circumambulation of the Kaaba—before suddenly falling ill. She was admitted to King Fahad General Hospital in Makkah on Sunday but passed away the following day.

The Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Musah Uduimoh, confirmed the incident, stating that she was laid to rest in Makkah in accordance with Islamic rites. Her family has since been informed of her passing.

Uduimoh extended his condolences to the grieving family and reiterated the board’s commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of all pilgrims under its care.

Dazumi's death underscores the health challenges faced by many elderly pilgrims during the strenuous pilgrimage. The Hajj, known for its physical demands, continues to pose risks, particularly to those with underlying medical conditions.

In previous years, similar incidents have occurred. For instance, in 2023, at least four Nigerian pilgrims lost their lives due to health complications linked to the extreme heat and exertion.

In response to such recurring issues, both Saudi authorities and national Hajj boards have introduced improved health screenings, enhanced medical facilities, and comprehensive orientation programmes aimed at better preparing pilgrims for the journey.

As the 2025 Hajj progresses, Nigerian officials are advising all pilgrims to stay hydrated, follow medical guidance, and report any signs of illness promptly to prevent further tragedies.
