The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) resit conducted for candidates affected by technical disruptions during the initial exercise.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the resit was held to accommodate 336,845 candidates from centres across six states where system glitches had compromised the integrity of the original exams. Out of this number, 21,082 candidates were absent on the day of the rescheduled test.
Low Scores Across the Board
Surprisingly, JAMB revealed that over 99% of those who took the resit scored below 200 — a trend that contradicts previous assumptions that the cancelled sessions may have produced high-performing candidates. The board noted that only a handful managed to score as high as 217, effectively debunking rumours of top scorers being affected by the cancellation.
Irregularities Uncovered
The examination body also uncovered various forms of malpractice during the resit process, implicating some candidates, CBT centres, and school proprietors. These irregularities, JAMB stated, have contributed to the decline in performance and highlight the need for stricter oversight.
A meeting of JAMB’s Chief External Examiners (CEEs) was convened after the resit to evaluate the outcome and ensure transparency. The committee, led by Prof. Olufemi Peters, Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), collaborated with psychometric expert Prof. Boniface Nworgu to analyse and validate the results.
Special Consideration for Underage Candidates
As part of efforts to maintain fairness, JAMB also resolved to release the results of underage candidates who had initially been withheld — provided no legal issues were involved. However, these candidates remain ineligible for admission, having signed an agreement during registration that only those who meet the age and academic criteria would be considered.
Board Commended for Transparency
The CEEs commended JAMB’s leadership and transparency throughout the process, urging the board to stay committed to upholding the credibility of its examinations.
JAMB also emphasized that performance trends observed in the resit are consistent with historical data, which has shown pass rates fluctuating between 11% and 34% over the past decade.
No High Scores Lost in Cancelled Exams
Addressing public concerns about candidates who may have scored highly in the cancelled sessions, JAMB clarified that such claims are unsubstantiated. The data showed that very few candidates exceeded 217 marks in the affected centres, reaffirming the board’s decision to cancel and reschedule the exams in those areas.
