ABUJA – Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
Obi made the announcement in a 7-minute video currently circulating among party supporters via WhatsApp, where he addressed a group of enthusiastic young Nigerians.
Responding to a direct question about his political future, Obi stated clearly, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
He also addressed concerns regarding the internal crises plaguing both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing the tensions to alleged interference from the ruling government. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government—quote me anywhere,” he declared.
Drawing from past political experience, Obi recalled how former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua intervened during a previous party crisis by directing the then INEC Chairman to ensure peace was restored. He lamented the current lack of such leadership, insisting that today’s systemic problems are deliberately engineered to weaken opposition.
“These are the kinds of institutional reforms I’m committed to if given the opportunity to lead,” he said. “We can’t build a working democracy without strong, functional opposition parties.”
Urging citizens not to lose faith in the democratic process, Obi called on Nigerians—especially the youth—to take active ownership of their electoral rights, emphasizing that the power to uphold free and fair elections ultimately lies with the people, not just party agents.
He also advocated for generational change in politics, stating that he believes there should be a retirement age for public office seekers. “By 2027, I’ll be 65. I don't want to be contesting in my 70s,” he noted.
Obi’s reaffirmation of his 2027 ambition reinforces his ongoing commitment to political reform, youth engagement, and a vision for a more accountable Nigerian government.
