A severe flood has severed the primary road connecting Jigawa State to the neighboring states of Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi.
The incident, which occurred following a heavy downpour early yesterday morning, has left the major highway connecting Birnin Kudu to Malawa, Babaldu, and the neighboring states of Gombe and Bauchi completely submerged, halting vehicular movement.
Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), disclosed this in a statement yesterday. He advised motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected area.
"The situation is critical. We urge all motorists to exercise caution and take alternative routes to ensure safety," Mahmud said.
NSCDC personnel have been deployed to redirect motorists and maintain order.
The flood has also impacted nearby communities, with residents reporting damage to homes and farmlands.
In a related development, approximately 1,200 households in Buji, Gwadayi, and Balangu in Buji and Kafin-Hausa Local Councils have been rendered homeless due to the devastating floods that have ravaged these communities.
One affected resident, Nasiru Hamza Gantsa, appealed for assistance, emphasizing that the flood had destroyed significant farmlands.
Other residents also reported losing their belongings and lamented the lack of basic necessities such as food and clean water.
In response, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, promised prompt intervention and the evacuation of victims to higher ground.
