Finidi George Officially Introduced as Super Eagles Coach |
The new Super Eagles coach has selected his former national teammate, Daniel Amokachi, along with two international assistants.
Ex-Nigerian international Finidi George was formally introduced as the Head Coach of the Nigerian senior men's national team, the Super Eagles, by the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday.
The new Super Eagles coach has selected his former national teammate, Daniel Amokachi, along with two international assistants.
The announcement came during Finidi's official introduction to the media as the head coach in Abuja.
Additionally, he has kept Olatunji Baruwa on as the goalkeeper's coach.
Baruwa, who previously served under Jose Peseiro, will continue in his role, while the identities of the two international assistants will be disclosed prior to the Super Eagles' 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Benin's Squirrels.
The 53-year-old, a former star at Ajax, who just resigned as Enyimba's head coach to focus on his new role, expressed that his immediate goal is to secure victories in the upcoming qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.
"Our immediate focus is on the forthcoming World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic. Winning these matches will set the right tone for our journey ahead," stated George.
He called for media support, acknowledging the challenges of the role.
"I am committed to ensuring the team functions well and starts securing victories. I don't feel any pressure, but I do ask for the media's support. It's a challenging role, but with collective effort, we can succeed," George remarked.
Following Jose Peseiro's exit, Finidi was named the substantive head coach of the Nigerian team. He previously assisted Peseiro at the last African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria claimed second place.
George's appointment was confirmed several weeks ago after he temporarily led the team for the international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
