Finidi George: The New Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, the nation's senior men's national team. This decision was made after the NFF Board approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee, handing over the reins to the 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis forward.

He won 62 caps for Nigeria and achieved gold, silver, and bronze medals from various AFCON tournaments. One of his most memorable moments was assisting Rashidi Yekini in scoring Nigeria's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in 1994.

George's coaching journey began as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro, and he later served as the interim coach after Peseiro's departure. During his interim tenure, he oversaw two friendly matches in Morocco, ending an 18-year winless streak against Ghana and suffering a loss to Mali.

As the new Super Eagles boss, George's immediate task is to guide the team to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic. These matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles currently lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign.
