| Bandits Attack Emir's Palace in Zurmi, Kill Three and Abduct Residents |
The attack on the Emir's palace has raised concerns about the safety of traditional institutions and the increasing threat of banditry in the region.
On Wednesday night, bandits launched a brazen attack on the palace of the Emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Bunu, killing three people and abducting several residents. The bandits, who stormed the town around 10pm, also attacked the residence of former Military Administrator of Nasarawa State, Colonel Bala Muhammad Mande (rtd). Although Emir Bunu was in the palace during the attack, he was safely evacuated to Gusau, the state capital.
The bandits destroyed a GSM mast and burnt two generating sets near the palace, and also looted properties in the emir's family house. Residents reported that the bandits fired shots at the entrance gate of the palace, attempting to gain access, but were unsuccessful due to the locked gate. The emir was reportedly the main target, as this was the second attempt to kidnap him.
Residents expressed fear and frustration, calling on the government to provide adequate security to protect their lives and properties. One resident, Muhammad Inuwa, said he was contemplating relocating his family to Gusau due to the trauma caused by repeated bandit attacks.
The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, Muhammad Shehu Dalijan, confirmed the attack, but did not confirm the number of casualties. However, sources revealed that three people, including Sarkin Gida of Zurmi Emirate, Alhaji Yusuf Buhari, were abducted by the bandits.
