Brazilian football icon Marta has announced that she will retire from international football this year, bringing an end to a remarkable career that has spanned over two decades. The 38-year-old striker, who is Brazil's all-time record goalscorer, revealed her decision in an interview with CNN Brazil.
Marta, who has played in five Olympic Games and six World Cups, has had a storied career, winning Olympic silver medals in 2004 and 2008, and finishing as runner-up in the 2007 World Cup. She is the all-time leading goal-scorer in World Cups, men's and women's, with an impressive 17 goals in 23 appearances.
While Marta may still make one final appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer, she has confirmed that this will be her last year with the national team. "If I go to the Olympics, I will enjoy every moment, because, regardless of whether I go to the Olympics or not, this is my last year with the national team," she said.
Marta, who has played club football for Orlando Pride since 2017, expressed her confidence in the next generation of Brazilian footballers, saying, "We have a really qualified team with really talented girls who, as the years go by, you will see what I'm talking about... Because of this, I feel very comfortable saying: 'Listen, I'm passing on to you, I'm going to pass on the baton and you continue to carry on this legacy.'"
