From Traditional Worshiper to Muslim: Iya Osun’s Journey of Faith in Kwara State

Abebi Ashabi Efunsetan Yakubu, a well-known teacher of traditional religion in Kwara state, has embraced Islam, according to Daily Trust. Born into a Muslim family, Yakubu, who is popularly known as Iya Osun, had left Islam and openly practiced Isese religion (traditional worship).

In a viral video, Iya Osun recited the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, and said that she chose Islam based on her own conviction.

She said:

“I was not forced to accept Islam, but I chose it because I followed the path of the Messenger of God (PBUH), his Companions and the Scholars. I never completely abandoned Islam, but I did not know God as I should until He revealed Himself to me and I realized the truth.”

Her family rejoiced over her conversion to Islam.

A man who identified himself as her father in the video thanked God Almighty for guiding her back to Islam. He said that this day was one of the happiest days of his life because he witnessed his daughter’s conversion. One of her sons, Abdulhakeem, said:

“Our mother never left Islam. She prayed, fasted in Ramadan and paid Zakat at the end of every fast.”
